Nonthaburi Museum

The Museum of Nonthaburi is located next to the pier in Nonthaburi and is the local learning center of the largest city in Thailand after Bangkok. Nonthaburi museum was used as the city hall up to the year of opening in 2009.This historical building was built in 1910 during the reign of King Rama VI. Made completely from teak wood it is a jewel of Thai architecture, not only because of its significant beauty, but also its rich historical background. The King’s College also occupied the premises in the past. This college, started in 1897 by King Rama V, was a boarding school modeled after the British public schools.

The museum spreads over two floors and four sections: the reception hall, the old Nonthaburi city hall, the orchard and the terracotta hall.

Nonthaburi Museum reception hall is where visitors can learn about the geography of Nonthaburi province and general information about the area. The old city hall displays a model of the historical building and architecture styles are explained in detail.

One of the main attractions of Nonthaburi Museum is by far the orchard. The Gallery of the Old Nonthaburi, the City of Orchard is where visitors can dive into the history of the city from the Ayutthaya era when the city earned its reputation as the city of the famous durian. Then there is Nonthaburi’s Fine Arts display where visitors can enjoy several exhibitions on important figures of Nonthaburi, amazing and detailed Mural Paintings,

On the second floor of Nonthaburi museum is the pottery zone with the famous terracotta Mon pottery from Koh Kred Island. Earthenware is the seal of Nonthaburi province, pottery is an occupation which has been passed from generation to generation. Nonthaburi museum opens Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and weekends or public holidays from 10 am to 6 pm.
